Health (and Life Science)
We have extensive experience leading design teams and working with clients to deliver exceptional buildings within the healthcare sector, both nationally and internationally, working with specialist teams brought together to suit the needs of each project.
The practice has completed a number of large and complex healthcare buildings, the latest being the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick, just outside Birmingham, UK, due to be completed this year (2023) and fully opened early next year (2024). The 900 bed acute hospital will have the largest Accident and Emergency department in Western Europe. The UCLH Grafton Way Building, home to London’s first Proton Beam Therapy Unit, opened in 2022 and is already winning awards for its innovative design and skilful delivery.
Other healthcare projects (including life science/research and development projects) include a design for a Maggie’s Centre, an operating theatre extension for the Bellinzona Hospital in Switzerland and a feasibility study for the Wellcome Trust in London, UK. All of our projects, large and small, demonstrate the attention to detail, technical excellence and clarity of purpose and design that is characteristic of the practice’s approach. Before founding the practice Edward Williams led the team which delivered the multi award winning Macmillan Cancer Centre for UCLH in London, completed in 2010, and the Frick Chemistry Laboratory for Princeton University in the USA. Laura Carrara-Cagni delivered the La Spezia Hospital in Italy, still under construction in 2023.
