Cross bracing
At the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital internal shear walls have been replaced during design by external cross bracing which is expressed on the facades to provide lateral stability to the building. This structural and architectural solution uses less material, (a small amount of steel versus a large amount of concrete for the shear walls of a bay), does not take up internal floor space and allows greater flexibility for efficient internal planning and for future replanning if and when needed. A fully 360 degree sustainable solution.
