The vaults and arches at the Puglian Palazzo in Italy
Part of the project refurbish the beautiful palazzo in Andria, in Puglia, the heel of Italy, is to enhance the character of the internal spaces so they function for modern life and at the same time resolve multiple material and building fabric issues common to historic buildings.
We have therefore decided to uncover the arches and the vault ceiling to expose the original “tufo” stone texture by chiselling away the plaster finish. Due to the delicate nature of the work the plaster finishes are removed by hand unveiling little by little the beautiful structural stone textures of this historical stunning building.
The unveiled complexity of textures and materials is remarkable, bridging the gap between the past and our contemporary design approach for this refurbishment.
All the old plaster has been carefully removed from vaults and arches.
The vaults will be sprayed with a light dilution following careful repairs. This is in order to have a subtle contrast between the arches, staying fairfaced, and the vaults, whitewashed.
