Week 1 - Adventures in 3D printing
At the end of the first week we have actually managed to print some models, ranging from standard 3d models supplied by others to a truss for one of our projects. The final canopy truss structure was made of a number of printed parts and then assembled, almost exactly the way it would be pre-fabricated and built. So far we are feeling like this is really useful. It will
· streamline the design and procurement process by enabling us to explain more directly the idea and details behind our design,
· increase the speed of design team understanding and co-ordination,
· test the design in advance in detail
· allow the specialist fabricators a quicker start on their design elements.
It will ultimately cut costs, increase quality and speed up the construction process. It also gives people direct access to the design process by allowing easy visualisation and understanding of proposals – something we think our clients who are not experienced built environment professionals will very much enjoy.
We’ll keep you posted on whether our early enthusiasm is justified.
