Barts Health NHS Trust commissioned the practice to produce an architectural vision for the development of this site.
The proposal develops a series of public urban squares that allow a vibrant mixed-use development around, and, in them, public urban spaces of different sizes and shapes are arranged with both object and background buildings to create a suitably dense urban form that encourages public interaction and provides opportunities for engagement and growth.
Site wide services, sustainable energy strategies and the proximity of the Underground and new Crossrail station combine to make this an exemplary central urban development.
The buildings are designed to be flexible and will accommodate a variety of uses from apartments, to offices and research laboratories to ground floor retail and entertainment activities.
In 2016 we were invited to develop the masterplan further, and appointed by both Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary College (University of London) to develop opportunities and constraints in more detail and considering the building footprints, scale, inter-relationships, massing and setting out the design principles for the site.
