We were appointed to develop an ambitious urban neighbourhood centred vision for two hospital sites Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH) & City Hospital (CH) and surrounding areas to enable and advance discussions with other stakeholders and relevant local authorities and government organisations.MMUH is approximately 500m away from City Hospital site and is within 10-15 minutes from Birmingham City centre and is close to major road rail and canal networks. The hospital when completed in 2023 will provide 5000+ staff and visitors in terms of site activity.
Place Making Ideas & The Vision for development around the Midland Metropolitan Hospital includes:
Green development: the introduction of greenery, tree lined spaces and green roofs to improve air quality and reduce heat island effect and rain water run-off. Improvements to Biodiversity in an urban area. And recovery and incorporation of existing suitable structures.
Connectivity: Improved links between Midland Metropolitan Hospital site, City Hospital site and Birmingham City Centre, re-opening of canal routes, improved public transport strategy, and the introduction of new major bike lanes.
Public Space: the provision of major public spaces as the core of the development, the improvement of communal and social interaction and an improved sense of community.
Economic Regeneration: the NHS as the largest employer in the area, a mixed-use scheme encouraging commercial activity within the
development, higher density encourages social, commercial and academic interchange within the development and attracts other organisations.
Health Improvement: Strategic transport links that encourage an active lifestyle, increased Employment opportunities and Green development improves air quality and encourages physical activity.
